Counselor Trainee

Counselor Trainees are committed to completing the following:
1. Application
   a. Complete Counselor Trainee Application
   b. Submit to a criminal background check.
   c. Provide three references.

2. Interview and Approval
    An interview will take place with and final approval given by the Director of NHCM and one other member of the NHCM Leadership Team.

3. Formal Training
   a.
Complete one basic Biblical Counseling training seminar from the following options:
-Foundations of Biblical Counseling, www.biblicalcounselingcenter.org (Weekend seminars offered at various locations.Sessions also available on DVD.Check with NHCM office for further information.)
·Biblical Counseling Training Conference Track 1 at Faith Church in Lafayette, IN, www.faithlafayette.org (Five day seminar offered once a year.Sessions also available on DVD.Check with NHCM office for further information.)

·11 week Monday trainings at Faith Church in Lafayette, IN www.faithlafayette.org (Offered 3 times a year.)

     b. Complete NHCM-201 course (To be announced.)


4. Practical Training (All levels must be completed)

          Level 1 Observer
a. Complete a minimum of 15 sessions of counseling observation
(View counseling arranged by NHCM /or counseling DVD’s – contact NHCM)
b. Attend 75% of training classes offered by NHCM
c. Receive approval from Counselor Trainer & Director of NHCM before moving to next level of training. You may be asked to complete additional hours of training.
d. While observing you will:
Listen and observe both trainer and counselee.
Pray for the Holy Spirit’s leading in all participants.
Take notes. Do not become so involved with notes that you miss out on listening.
Discuss session with your trainer to gain understanding in the process.
Case Reports -- you will be taught how to complete reports. You are responsible to turn this report into the Director and Counselor Trainer after each session.
e. Approval for completion of this level comes from your Counselor Trainer and the NHCM Director. You may be asked to complete additional hours of training.

          Level 2 Co-Counselor

a. Complete a minimum of 15 sessions as a co-counselor
b. You will be teamed up with one or two different Counselor Trainers. Together you will be assigned a counseling case. You will be invited by your Counselor Trainer to engage in the counseling process as appropriate. You are expected to attend every scheduled counseling session for that case.
c. Debrief with your Counselor Trainer after each session.
d. Complete Case Reports for each counseling session. You are responsible to turn this report into the Director and Counselor Trainer after each session.
e. Approval for completion of this level comes from your Counselor Trainer and the NHCM Director. You may be asked to complete additional hours of training.


          Level 3 Lead Counselor
a. Complete a minimum of 15 sessions as a lead counselor.
b. You will be responsible to plan and lead the counseling session as your Counselor Trainer observes. The Counselor Trainer may interject questions or summarizing statements.
c. Debrief with your Counselor Trainer to discuss the process, the questions you might have, and to discuss the main issues and direction for the next session.
d. Complete case report and submit to the NHCM Director and Counselor Trainer before the next session.
e. With your Counselor Trainer and NHCM Director’s approval you will be ready to counsel on your own or with another team member. The goal is to have completed at least 15 counseling sessions with your Counselor Trainer. You may be asked to complete additional hours of training.
f. Approval for completion of this level comes from your Counselor Trainer and the NHCM Director. You may be asked to complete additional hours of training.
